TBCH serves school age children through its residential child care program.  Children entering TBCH care are generally able to be served by Level 1 low intensity, structured residential services and may come into care when families are experiencing crises related to:

• Parental substance abuse
• Homeless or unsafe living environment
• Parental incarceration
• Parent-child conflict
• Other significant family problems

Children often enter TBCH care when their immediate or extended family members find themselves temporarily unable to provide an adequate home and family life to meet the needs of the child or children.

The average length of stay for children who enter TBCH care is about 22 months.  Typically, children stay between 6 months and two years.  A planned discharge date for the child which coincides with the end of a child's school term is preferred to minimize educational disruptions.

About Campus Life

Where Will My Child Live?
Children in the care of TBCH live in spacious, comfortable homes called cottages that are staffed by a married houseparent couple who take care of six to eight children.  Both boys and girls live in each cottage.

What About School?
Children who live at TBCH attend local schools and are either driven to school by TBCH staff or ride the school bus. TBCH provides tutoring services for children who need extra assistance to keep up with school work.  Every child has a structured afternoon study time during the school year.

What Other Activities Will My Child Be Involved In?
Each cottage attends a local Baptist church as a family-style group.  Children participate in age appropriate activities of the church they attend.  Each cottage group has regular family-style devotion times.

Children may participate in extra curricular school activities, sports and skill building programs in the community.  Children also participate in campus activities such as swimming, campus games, bike riding, movie night and free play. They are encouraged to make friends both on the TBCH campus and in the community.

Many children receive therapeutic clinical counseling services either on campus or in the community.  Children may visit their families on and off campus as long as there are no safety concerns in the home.

What Will Be Expected Of My Child?
Each child who comes to TBCH is expected to participate in cottage life by showing respect to others in the cottage, helping with routine daily chores, working toward achieving personal goals and working to get the best education possible.

What Will Be Expected Of Me As The Parent Or Guardian?
Parents, legal custodians and guardians are required to develop a Plan Of Care with the help of the family’s TBCH social worker.  The Plan of Care outlines the conditions, situations and problems that need to improve in order for their child to return home.

Parents, legal custodians and guardians are expected to continue to support their child through visits, phone calls and modest financial contributions.  The goal is for children to be able to recognize continued investment in their lives by their parents, legal custodians and guardians.

Will TBCH Take Custody Of My Child?
Most children come into TBCH care through voluntary placement by their parent, legal custodian or guardian.  A child who is voluntarily placed may be withdrawn from care any time.  A planned discharge date and time is beneficial to the child.

TBCH may seek to obtain legal custody of a child if the responsible adult, after a reasonable period of time, fails to make progress toward improving the conditions which led to the child’s placement outside the home.
